The program at National American University (NAU) in Rapid City, South Dakota is a wonderful opportunity for students to expand their equine and business education. They are introduced to the equine industry through Walt Brindley and his staff. Many fields of today’s fast growing equine industry give the students an opportunity to obtain needed education for a successful future in a chosen equine field. Students also obtain a degree in business to balance the whole picture.

Walt and his staff are producing well-rounded young professionals who will take the equine industry to new heights. We at McElhaney Paint and Quarter Horses feel very fortunate to be a part of this program – it has been a blessing to us. We are open to any questions about the program so feel free to contact us!

Kasandra came into our lives in her freshman year at NAU. She was assigned our mare, De Dee Cinder (Cricket), in the green colt class. Returning the next year to continue her education, Kasandra took Cricket on into the advanced levels and by spring she was ready to begin showing in the reining classes.

Returning for the third year, Amber took over the reins of Cricket and rode her in working cowhorse, english, dressage and jumping. In her classes, Amber and Cricket drew yells and loud applause from the crowd!

Meanwhile, Kasandra has taken charge of our stallion, JB Zippos Hawkeye, and they rode in the working cowhorse quarter in the program. Zip has shocked us all with his ability and desire to work cattle. Still in training with Kasandra, she and Zip are making strides toward big goals. At their first horse show together, Zip came out a point earner! Watch for this eye catching team!

Both of these girls have bright futures in the industry – Amber aspiring to ride eventing horses – Kasandra aspiring to show in the western arena with her main focus on great reining horses.

We are more than proud of our association
with both of these young trainers!

Cricket was purchased at Sturgis Livestock Auction at 2 1/2 months old for $172.00! We let her grow up for a few years and when she was a coming 4 year old, she was matched with Kasandra Meyer to break in the freshman class at NAU. She rode Cricket so well at their finals they made the local television news as a special that evening.

Kasandra stayed in South Dakota with us for the summer of 2003 and worked hard to attend shows in South Dakota and Wyoming. Cricket took the busiest month off due to injury but that rest was possibly a benefit.

They entered the Central States Fair Quarter Horse Shows with hopeful hearts…it was also the SDQHA Futurity in Junior Reining. As they entered the arena, Kasandra rode Cricket with confidence in a class of seasoned trainers. Quietly riding out of the barn after the run we waited…the judges gave her a first and a second!

So happy - so proud
– all of us were ear to ear smiles!

Now in Cricket’s third year at NAU, she has teamed with Amber Hoots in working cowhorse and new fields of english, jumping and dressage. They looked great in both!

Now a point of decision has come … Cricket is bred to try yet another avenue to adventure ... Motherhood! In foal to Zip for 2005.

Cricket is being offered for sale. She is one in a million! Excellent youth or amateur horse or broodmare. She could easily go back to the show pen as she loves the glamour!
