| HIS STORY… Zip came to us in his yearling year from Barclay Quarter Horses in Iowa – hence the word ‘Hawkeye’ in his name. Nearing his two year old year, we had him started by Erica Hustead. She gave him a nice beginning on roll backs and body control in the two months she had him. Zip then came home to test breed a couple of mares – a bay Quarter Horse Doc Bar bred mare and a Paint mare. Once holiday was over, Don Ulmer rode Zip for three months. At Don’s, he began the basics for reining and was introduced to cattle. In the spring, we closed our eyes, said our prayers and turned him out with a herd of mares to pasture breed. He developed into a well mannered young stallion with only one ‘character mark’! Kasandra Meyer began his continued training in the fall at National American University’s Equine Program in reining and working cowhorse. He became ill putting their progress off for a couple of months. After the holidays in 2003, Zip and Casandra set a grueling schedule to be ready for the new Quarter Horse shows at the Black Hills Stock Show Winter Classic. He also stood on ‘Stallion Row’ at the stock show in 2004. At this first show, Zip was 3rd and 4th in aged stallions while in riding condition. To expose him to the arena, we added western pleasure and he was 2nd both days – becoming an AQHA point earner! He moves like silk! In reining, the first day he was 6th out of 16 entries in a tough class of junior horses. We were very pleased with his first show. He handled the excitement well – a great young stallion with a bright show career ahead of him. Watch for them in western pleasure, english pleasure, reining and possibly halter also. As a young sire, Zip’s first two foals were more than we expected – both very balanced, doll headed and eye appealing. They could easily halter with their muscle type. THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT |
